I froze. He froze. Even time froze.

I was staring into the exact same pair of eyes I had stared into a year and few months ago. The exact replica of the eyes I stare at in my son’s face everyday. My mouth hung open and my breath seized. Grace was so lost she just kept looking from me to him wondering what was going on. He broke the silence.

Mary-Jay!”

Hearing that voice just awakened my senses.

what sort of joke is this?” I asked noone in particular. I turned to get my son and made to leave the auditorium. I don’t know how Absalom got to me but he held me back.

don’t you dare!” I roared at him. I saw him recoil, then I stepped out of the church. Grace ran after me begging me to wait for her. I wanted to ignore her and kept walking fast but Nathan’s weight and our bags didn’t let me go far before she caught up with me.

MJ what’s your problem? That’s the leader of my unit you just yelled at” she was obviously upset. My brain couldn’t process anything at that point so I asked her to get out of my sight an went to look for a cab.

I couldn’t control the tears that rained down my eyes all through the ride home. I thought I had gone past the pain Absalom made me pass through but seeing him again just brought it all back. When my mom opened the door to welcome us, I fell into her arms, weeping. She quickly got Nathan from my back, laid him on the chair and took me to her room so my noise wouldn’t wake him up.

Mary-Jane, my love, what happened?”

When I told her everything, she was short of words. She laid my head on her chest, cooing softly into my ears and rubbing my head so I could calm down.

Then the words of that young man who closed the service came back to me. It was as if God had tried to prepare me to meet Absalom, yet I had been caught unprepared.
