Absalom went on his knees pleading with me to forgive him. He said he had prayed severely to God for the day he would set eyes on me again to apologize. I was moved with compassion and with tears in my eyes, I said
“Absalom, I forgive you” and I meant it. Tears rolled down his cheeks, I told him it was okay and I made to leave but he called me back.
“Mary-Jay” I turned to look at him “thank you” I wanted to speak but words were not forthcoming so I just nodded and left.
When I got back to the restaurant, my mom said she wanted to see me when she got back home at night. She asked after the meeting with Absalom because she had been aware of it.
“I’ve forgiven him” I shrugged.
“God bless you my child, I’ve been meaning to ask though. Does he know about Nathan?”
“mom, that’s not necessary now”
“Mary-Jane you are my child, I will tell you the truth. Nathanael needs a father in his life. His father”
“he’ll get one when I’m done with school and get married.” I wasn’t letting Absalom close to my son.
“And how long is that from now? Four years? Five? What happens to the vacuum of a father for those years? Can you effectively fill it?”
“Mom, lots of women have singlehandedly raised their kids all over the world. I would do so too”. My mother shook her head
“Mary-Jane, when your father died I know how I struggled. You think it was a jolly ride for those women you’re referring to? Look for one and find out. I don’t think God made you meet that man coincidentally again”
“Yes mummy, God wanted me to forgive Absalom and I’ve done that. I’m not interested in having anything else to do with him.”
“who said you should have anything else to do with him? Introduce Nathanael to his father else he won’t forgive you when he grows up”
“Mummy why are you talking like this? Why do you think my son will antagonize me when he grows up?”
“Because you’ll be snatching an important part of his life away from him. Goodnight”
I couldn’t sleep all night.
